Harry Bauer

Biography

Harry Bauer was born in Deggendorf, Germany, in October 1947. Despite his artistic interests, he initially worked primarily as a reporter and lead writer for the tz München after his Abitur, and later as a section editor for the Passauer Neue Presse (now the Mediengruppe Bayern). However, he expresses his desire to act as an ambassador for positive human interaction—and the spirit of being one humanity—most notably through his painting and object art. He took the decisive step of stepping into the public eye as an artist with his first major solo exhibition in the cloister of the Benedictine abbey in the year 2000. Harry Bauer favors large-format canvases that allow him to create profound pictorial spaces. His predominantly abstract visual language draws inspiration from American Abstract Expressionism (Jackson Pollock) and Art Informel (Jean Fautrier, Antoni Tàpies). Yet, it is above all his playful approach and willingness to experiment with abstract forms, colors, and materials that link him to these movements. This interplay unfolds within the fundamental building blocks of human existence: elements charged with tension set against elements of calm; controlled order versus chaos; light against dark; simple applications of color contrasted with tactile relief and complex layering. One side is inconceivable without the other. In his works, however, these tense dualities resolve into a harmonious whole. Each resulting piece is unique—a work that the artist himself could not replicate exactly. It reflects the laws of creation, uniqueness and singularity, and the radiant power of presence. In an increasingly digital world, his works thus stand as bulwarks, reminding us of who we truly are as human beings: feeling creatures—vulnerable yet capable of healing, analog and present—engaged in a constant dialogue with ourselves and with creation. Harry Bauer’s works can be found in public spaces and have been acquired by companies and private collections. He has an extensive record of national and international exhibitions. Since 2026, he has been represented internationally by the LDXArt Gallery.
