Marion Krone

Biography

Marion Krone was born in Düsseldorf in 1962. After studying art and social education (University of Applied Sciences Kaiserswerth/Bochum, 1983-1988), she expanded her artistic training in various studios, including those of the artist and aesthetics professor Wilfrid Polke in Düsseldorf. After working as a social worker and in marketing, her first public exhibition took place in 1998. She lives and works as an artist in Düsseldorf. Her artistic approach and concerns are often reminiscent of the well-known Dansaekhwa Movement, which primarily shaped the art scene in Korea after 1960 and is associated with artists such as Kim, Tae Ho. There is no actual connection. Her style is reduced to a technique of applying paint that is repeated throughout the picture and is based on the recurrence of forms within the image. She often works with a palette reduced to specific, often quite intense colors which playfully reappear in different places in the picture. The effect is therefore more accurately described as “monochrome,” because the eye perceives the overall surface and colors of the picture as one whole, even when multiple colors are used in the details at close inspection. Like her aforementioned Korean colleague, she enjoys experimenting with a very time-consuming, multi-layered application of paint that protrudes from the picture as a semi-relief. That’s why she sometimes uses also the collage techniques. The resulting abstract, three-dimensional patterns have a strongly meditative quality: At first glance, their simplicity makes them easy to grasp; at second glance, their symbolic character becomes clear, alluding to the effort but also the joy of intensive manual work. The creative power unfolds in the repetition of contemplative hand movements, meaning the hand executes similar, recurring spatula and brushstrokes in a seemingly unintentional process. The essence of her paintings thus also promotes a contemplative life, which symbolically stands as a counterpoint to the efficiency-oriented society and has a healing effect on its ills. Marion Krone looks back on many years of exhibition activity. She has been represented by LDXArt Gallery since 2025.
