Karin Thoma

Biography

Karin Thoma was born in Danzig in 1941. She grew up in Munich and later studied education and art history there. She passed two state examinations for teaching at a primary school. In 1977/78, she participated in graphic arts courses at the Ann Arbor Art Center in Michigan. Since 1981, she has worked as a freelance painter in Frankenthal, Germany, and Octon, France. Karin Thoma draws on her multifaceted life experiences to captivate her audience with large-format, abstract paintings. She primarily uses acrylic paints, which she employs in a unique and distinctive way. One could almost mistake her work for being executed in a chalk technique. Her paintings appear as light as those of Wassily Kandinsky, as she typically sets her interplay of color and form against a broad, white background. Her affinity for the avant-garde of the last century, such as Pablo Picasso’s abstract period, is clearly evident. However, the resulting allusions to her own experiences speak their own language and bear the artist’s unmistakable fingerprint. Viewers are never quite sure whether they are looking into a face, eyes, or perhaps recognizing mysterious symbols that defy interpretation. This invitation to see something enigmatic, and thus to never tire of looking at her works, as the forms constantly elude any precise interpretation, lends the paintings a special fascination. The artist has exhibited primarily in Germany and France. Since 2025, she has been represented internationally by LDXArt Gallery.
