Bernd Muss

Biography

Bernd Muss was born in Hamburg in 1973. He has significantly shaped the Hamburg tattoo scene for 30 years with his sketchy, maritime-inspired freestyle. As a well-known street artist, he enlivens gray walls with his large-scale graffiti, which can be found primarily in Hamburg and Harburg. For several years, he has also been working with objets trouvés, i.e., art composed primarily of found objects. The artist lives and works in Hamburg. His strong affinity for the sea runs like a thread through his artistic activities: his tattoo and graffiti art, and his object art. For him, the sea is more than just a reference point to his hometown of Hamburg, its harbor, and its ships: It speaks of dreams and the past. The artist’s process for his object art begins on the seashore with the collection of flotsam, which to him is analogous to collecting long-forgotten stories: metals with rusty patinas or woods with seaweed are reflected in each of his objects as a metaphor for life. The artist sees assembling and adapting the objects, which sometimes resembles a fractious game but other times proceeds smoothly, as symbolic of relationships of all kinds. The resulting unique pieces, such as ship-like structures, combine nature and art. Bernd Muss has been exhibiting regularly since 2006. He has been represented internationally by LDXArtodrome Gallery since 2025.
