Barbara Münstermann

Biography

Barbara Münstermann was born in 1954 in the Remscheid district (Germany). After studying at the Berlin University of Fine Arts (1992-1995), she also took part in various artistic training events in the areas of etching and printmaking, photography and free and experimental painting. From 2018 to 2022 she studied painting with Prof. Markus Lüpertz at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolbermoor, which she completed as a master student. Since 2019 she has been a member of the art association “Kunst Stuttgart International” and the artist network “Spinne-Art”. She lives and works as a freelance artist in Berlin. In addition to collage and etching, the focus of her work is primarily painting. Barbara Münstermann’s abstract paintings are inspired by her real experiences with nature, but develop an independent, mystical character in the pictorial space. She often uses sketches or photographs to gather ideas for her paintings and begins with an ink drawing. Applying various layers to the canvas not only creates a great depth effect. Rather, the thematic starting point she chooses, such as the pictorial representation of “water,” also undergoes a metamorphosis in the painting process. At the end of the intuitive, creative process, the viewer is sometimes reminded of landscapes, stones or other structures. Her pictures thus express the idea that everything began in one origin of creation, that everything is constantly developing and is connected to everything that follows. The possibility of one thing becoming another, both mentally and visually, hangs over her images like magic. Barbara Münstermann has been exhibiting since 1997 and has been represented internationally by the LDXArtodrome Gallery since 2024.
